If anyone from ww2 is incredibly racist to Japan i honestly would not judge them for it, Japan back then was what North korea wishes it could be, their actions are some of the worst things history has ever recorded and if someone saw that first hand and came out of it being like "slap a japanese" i would 100% sympathize with that. the Protestant Ethic definitely explains a lot of things about our country, puts things in perspective. Me and my sister were raised Christian, specifically the Seventh Day Adventist denomination, grew up on Veggietales but... as we've grown older, we've drifted from the church as religion in this country is overbearing and too... right leaning for our tastes and as a result my sister is an atheist and I agnostic. We also are both part of the LGBT community in some way if that explains our drifting away from the church/religion as a whole. I am also autistic so there's a disconnect in my mind of when people say they practice what the Bible preaches, which I *know* one of those things is "love thy neighbor " and meanwhile that person is a homophobic bigot. If you really practiced what the Bible says, wouldn't you... i don't know, mind your business? But noooo, we gotta "think of the children" and protect their "innocent" eyes from two men kissing 🙄 Even though I am no longer part of the religion, I also still enjoy Christian music, though not so much the stuff my mom listens to on the radio, stuff like Skillet and Relient K, who I consider to be one of if not my favorite band (which... you might be able to tell given my username lol), *and* I still bop to VeggieTales songs, the Larryboy theme fucking SLAPS.

I'm reminded of a time when I came across a news story where an otaku convention in Japan was cancelled due to some sort of disaster - whether it was an earthquake or a hurricane, I can't recall. This was long ago enough that any hope I had of locating that article as a source seems to have been dashed, and I clearly can't recall the specific details myself so take what I say with a grain of salt. What I do recall was negative sentiment to the people affected from government officials at the time, even going so far as to say that the event being cancelled was a good result (or something to that effect). I was already under the assumption that Japan as a whole wasn't too fond of its otaku culture, but that response struck me as unusually harsh. Given this video, and the understanding of who the government wants as an audience for that particular industry, it's less surprising to me now that they don't need to be as fond of their local anime fans. That's not the entire picture for sure, there are other factors at play, but it feels like one more piece to the puzzle. GATE does strike me as interesting (not the anime itself, I wasn't interested when I watched it), since that one is targeted towards Japanese viewers. The propaganda therein was extraordinarily on the nose, but the underlying message feels less "we've refined our image, so do us a solid every now and then" and more "join our military, we've got cute girls". Given that it's a more recent series, it might just be a sign of changing strategies over time. Also yes Moony, thank you for telling us the story of the world's first weeb.

Just something quick about Japans age of consent laws, the 13 year thingy isnt actually true at all. That was more of a minimum that regions had to abide by as most areas, including Tokyo, had age of consent laws of 18 (which is higher than most countries)

Thank you so much for this video! It means so much to see allies advocating for us queers. I recently had to cut off a group of friends that I thought I valued when I was hit with "I'm offended you think you're a woman" and other disgusting transphobia and bigotry. It's been pretty tough to deal with the feelings, but overall I feel better. Because with friends like that, who needs enemies? My real friends support me, and their support means so much to me. May we live in a future where no one will ever have to go thorough what I had to go through. I'll make sure to let everyone I know they're safe with my and I will not tolerate any bigotry.
